Find out why
Open Settings Security Logs Upload Logs. Every image uploaded or refused is listed with the reason.
| Reason | What to do |
|---|---|
| Too large, or empty | Pictures uploaded through the store's forms can be up to 5 MB. Make the file smaller and try again. |
| Wrong type | Use JPEG, PNG, GIF or WebP. |
| Too many pixels | A picture can be at most 8000 pixels wide or tall. Resize it. |
| Couldn't be read or redrawn | The file is damaged, isn't really an image, or the server can't redraw images. Check that PHP's gd extension is switched on. |
| Couldn't be saved | The images/ folder must be writable. See Folders your store must be able to write. |
The media library says "larger than this server takes"
The media library takes pictures up to 10 MB and videos up to 100 MB, but never more than your server's PHP lets through in one upload: the smaller of upload_max_filesize and post_max_size. If your host's limit is lower, that's the limit you get.
To raise it, raise both values in your PHP settings at your host. On servers that run PHP as PHP-FPM or CGI, PHP also reads the .user.ini file in your site folder. It already sets post_max_size = 32M; you can add a line under it:
post_max_size = 32M
upload_max_filesize = 32MPHP picks up a change to .user.ini within a few minutes. Core updates never overwrite this file, so your change stays.
Why pictures are redrawn
Every picture is drawn again as a fresh image file and saved under a random name. That strips anything hidden inside the file, and turns phone photos stored sideways the right way up. It's also why the server needs gd: without it, no picture can be saved.
