Set up a gateway's return and webhook addresses

Each payment gateway shows the addresses its provider needs to send buyers and payment news back to your store. Copy them into the provider's dashboard once, and again whenever your store's address changes.

Not for Rewards stores

Rewards (coins-only) products have no payment gateways.

Where to find them

  1. Set your Site URL first

The addresses are built from Settings General Site URL. If it's empty, they use whatever address you opened the admin with. Set it to your real https:// address. See Switch to HTTPS or change your site address.

  2. Open the gateway

Go to Settings Payment Gateways and choose the provider.

  3. Copy the addresses

The card Addresses for your … dashboard shows them, each with a Copy button:

    • Return address: where the provider sends the buyer after paying. It ends in /payment-gateway/<gateway>/verify.php.
    • Webhook address: where the provider tells your store about a payment by itself. It shows only for gateways that have one.
  4. Paste them into the provider's dashboard

In the provider's own settings, add the return address and, where there is one, the webhook address.

  5. Test before going live

Keep Test mode on until a test payment goes through. A gateway with missing keys can't be switched on.

Why the webhook matters

Without a webhook, your store learns of a payment only when the buyer's browser comes back to the return address. If the buyer closes the tab first, the payment waits until you or the store ask the provider. See A customer paid but wasn't credited.

Webhook secrets

Some gateways also have a webhook secret field among their keys. Set the same secret in both places: on the webhook in the provider's dashboard, and in the gateway's settings in your admin.

When to copy them again

  • You switched the store from http:// to https://.
  • You moved the store to a new domain.
  • You changed the Site URL for any other reason.

The addresses in the provider's dashboard don't change by themselves, so payments keep going to the old address until you update them.

Test mode, live mode

The gateway page shows Test mode or Live payments. In test mode buyers go to the provider's sandbox, where no real money moves. Some gateways have no separate switch: the keys you save decide, test keys for test payments and live keys for real money. A few have no test mode at all, so try them with a small amount first.
