The setup wizard stops or fails

The setup wizard saves its progress after every step, so you rarely need to start again. Here is how to carry on, fix the common messages, start over cleanly if you must, and activate your licence by hand.

Carry on where it stopped

  • Open https://your-domain/install/ again. It returns to the step you reached. On the last step, closing the page and reopening it carries on with the add-ons that are left.
  • In a different browser, the wizard asks you to show it's yours: type the database password from step 3, or choose to verify your purchase key again. After 5 wrong passwords, wait 15 minutes.
  • On step 4, if setting up the tables was cut off, the wizard says how many tables were made. Press Finish setting up: the tables already made are kept.
  • If add-ons or themes fail on the last step, see Setup stops at add-ons.

Common messages

MessageWhat to do
"Install at the root of a domain or subdomain"Move the files to the top folder of a domain or subdomain, such as shop.example.com. A sub-folder doesn't work.
"This server has PHP … Ask your host to switch this site to PHP 8.2 or newer."Choose PHP 8.2 or newer for this site in your hosting panel, then reload.
"Missing: …" (a list of PHP extensions)Ask your host to switch on the extensions named. See your product's Requirements page for the full list.
"The vendor folder is missing."Upload the complete release zip again. Some upload tools skip folders.
"Ask your host to let PHP write to …"The folder named must be writable by PHP, usually permission 755 and owned by the web server's user. See Folder permissions.
"…PHP can't write there. Ask your host to fix the temporary folder"PHP's temporary folder isn't writable. Your host can fix it.
"The database server turned down that username or password."Check both in your hosting panel and type the password again.
"Signed in, but that database doesn't exist or this user can't use it."Create the database in your hosting panel and give this user access to it. Some hosts add a prefix to the name.
"Couldn't reach a database server at …"Check the host name. On most hosting it is localhost.
"This database server is … The store needs MySQL 8.0.13 or newer, or MariaDB 10.2.7 or newer"Ask your host for a newer database server.
"We couldn't verify that purchase key."Check it for a typo; it's in your purchase email. Everything else you entered is kept.
"We couldn't reach the licence server to check your key."Your server must be able to make outgoing HTTPS connections. Ask your host to allow them, then try again.

Activate your licence by hand

If your store is installed but its licence isn't active, sign in to your admin panel and open https://your-domain/admin/activate.php. Enter your purchase key, or sign in with your StartMyMarketplace account. See Licence and activation problems.

Start over from the beginning

Only do this if carrying on isn't possible. It sets this copy up as a new store.

  1. Delete the settings file

Delete the .env file the wizard wrote. It's in the private folder beside your site, or in the site folder itself.

  2. Delete the licence folder, if there is one

Delete the licenseguard folder next to where the .env was. If you delete .env but leave this folder, the site shows an error instead of the wizard.

  3. Run the wizard again

Open /install/. On step 4, if the database already holds tables from the first try, choose Delete this data and start empty and type the database name to confirm.

Don't import the database by hand

The wizard sets up the tables, your licence and your store's security keys together. Importing a database file yourself skips those steps, and can delete an existing store's data. If the wizard can't run on your server at all, contact support with the step you reached and the exact message.

After setup

Once setup finishes, the wizard closes itself: opening /install/ takes you to the admin sign-in, so nobody else can run it on your site.
