Mystery boxes

A customer pays for a box from their wallet, opens it, and gets one prize straight away, picked at random by the chances you set.

What you can set

  • Per box: a name, description and picture, a price (0 makes the box free), when it's on sale, and whether it shows on the storefront.
  • How many times one person may open it in 24 hours. A free box is limited to one open a day.
  • A prize pool, each prize with a rarity (Common, Rare, Epic or Legendary) and a chance.
  • Four kinds of prize: a physical item, coins, a coupon code or a digital file or link.
  • A full history of every opening, with one-tap call, email or WhatsApp for the winner.

The price is taken from the customer's wallet when they open the box, and never more than they have available.

Create a box

  1. Make the box

Open Mystery Boxes Boxes and choose New box. Fill in the name, description, price, the opens allowed per 24 hours, and when it's on sale.

  2. Add the prizes

Under Mystery Boxes Prizes, add each prize with its kind, rarity, value and chance. A coin prize needs the number of coins it pays; a coupon needs the code winners get; a digital prize needs the link or file.

  3. Check the numbers

The box page shows the average prize per open as a share of the price, and a player preview that updates as you edit.

  4. Show it

Switch it to visible when you're ready.

How chances work

Chances are relative: each prize's share of the total is its real chance of coming up. A prize with a chance of 20 comes up twice as often as one with 10.

The admin warns you when a box can't work or loses money:

WarningWhat it means
No prizesThe box can't be opened. Add prizes before it goes on sale.
No chance to win anythingEvery prize has a chance of 0. Give the prizes a weight.
Pays out more than it costsOn average each open pays out more than the price. Lower the big prizes' chances or raise the price.

A prize that isn't coins and has no value set counts as worth nothing in the payback figure, so give every prize a value.

Once a box has been opened, its price and chances are locked

Its chances are locked so they stay fair: each prize's kind, chance and value stay as they are, and no prize can be added. You can still rename a prize, change its picture, rarity, link or code, or remove one that has run out; the others then share its chance. A prize that has been won is retired rather than deleted, so its winners can still claim it.

A box that has been opened can't be deleted. Hide it instead. To start again with the same prizes, use Duplicate: the copy is hidden until you check it and show it.

Prizes and orders

Every opening is listed under Mystery Boxes Spins, and the box list shows prizes not claimed yet and items to send. Physical prizes are sent like any other order, and the Shop Operations plugin gives each shipped prize an invoice. No scheduled job is needed for boxes.

Head-to-head openings for two to four players are available with the Mystery Box Battles add-on, sold separately.

Your responsibility

Whether you may run auctions, prize draws, mystery boxes or prize games where you operate, and any licence you need for them, is yours to check. While any of these is switched on, sign-up requires a minimum age of 18, which you can raise.
